A vehicle is generally defined as a wheeled motor vehicle usually used for transport. Most commonly known automobiles are classified into three types: sedan, sports utility, and full-size car. Generally, most definitions of vehicles to state that they are rear-wheel-drive only, transport one to four people, sit atop the car engine with a transmission, and primarily transport goods rather than individuals. These cars differ from other cars in how they are designed, used, and driven.
Automobiles today are often equipped with a variety of modern technology features such as safety features, powertrain options, ABS braking, Cruise Control, airbags, and electronic Stability/ Skid Control. Automotive systems are constructed to prevent hazardous accidents and to optimize passenger safety. Many automobiles also incorporate various technologies to protect the integrity of the automobile and its components, provide power backup in the event of an emergency, and to keep occupants safe in the event of a crash. The majority of manufacturers design their automobile’s to meet the highest standards of safety currently available. However, all vehicles come with basic standard features which include front-seat side airbags, side-curtain airbags, front head airbags, active front head restraints, and seat belt pretensioners.
There are a number of automotive technologies used in the manufacture of automobiles. These technologies include cruise control, automatic transmissions, anti-lock brake systems, keyless entry, DSC, CDI, GPS, and many more. One of the most advance features in vehicles today is the incorporation of advanced automotive technology. Most vehicles now feature Electronic Stability/ Skid Control Systems, which is extremely helpful in preventing skidding. This system uses sensors to detect a skid and provides control inputs in order to prevent the vehicle from moving and/or losing traction on the road. In addition, the number of airbags in a vehicle has increased dramatically, which is designed to provide maximum protection to drivers in case of an accident.
Several new technologies have been introduced to the automobile industry for the purpose of providing greater safety to occupants of the vehicle. One of the most notable technologies introduced to vehicles recently is LATCH. LATCH is short for Low-Away Seat Belt Tolerance. This technology prevents the deployment of seat belts when the vehicle is in motion. Seat belts will be deployed if there is a chance of the vehicle moving and impacting another vehicle or an individual in the vehicle.
Advances in petroleum products and fuels have helped reduce the amount of pollutants automobiles emit into the atmosphere. However, the amount of fuel required to operate a vehicle on a daily basis continues to increase. In response to this, several measures have been implemented by the automotive industry in an effort to conserve fuel. Additionally, some vehicles have been manufactured with higher fuel efficiency factors. These higher fuel efficiency cars are expected to contribute to further decreases in the amount of petroleum used in automobiles.
